She Likes Me a Lot (But She Loves Him)

She Likes Me a Lot (But She Loves Him)

My baby broke up with her boyfriend
Right before we met
We’ve had two good years together
But she ain’t over him yet
Sometimes they talk on the telephone
They feel connected
I feel alone

I can still make her laugh but not as much
As I used to do
I don’t know if we’re just getting started
Or if we are through
She says I’m making all this stuff up
But it’s been two months
Since we made love

Chorus:
She likes everything about me
Except that I ain’t him
I’m trying as hard as I can
My chances look pretty slim
I’m haunted by a past
That I wasn’t involved in
She likes me a lot
But she loves him

Maybe when it’s all been said and done
We will be OK
But from where I stand it don’t look like
It will turn out that way
We just keep drifting further apart
And let me tell you
It breaks my heart

Chorus:
She likes everything about me
Except that I ain’t him
I’m trying as hard as I can
My chances look pretty slim
I’m haunted by a past
That I wasn’t involved in
She likes me a lot
But she loves him

She likes me a lot
But she loves him

Sally

Sally

Sally had an idea
It happened late last night
The more she thinks about it
The more she’s sure she’s right

Sally’s never been a girl
To obsess on an idea
But she says she has never
Seen things quite this clear

Chorus:
Nobody ever changes
For somebody else
The important changes in your life
You have to make for yourself

Sally used to talk a lot
She used to yell and scream
But threats fall on a deaf man’s ears
If he knows you’ll never leave

Now Sally doesn’t talk too much
No she don’t say a thing
She keeps one eye on the door
And one eye on her dreams

Chorus:
Nobody ever changes
For somebody else
The important changes in your life
You have to make for yourself

Reverse Jesus

Reverse Jesus (no MP3 available)

Billy read the bible
When he was just a kid
He really dug Jesus
And the groovy things he did
He said when I grow up
I’m gonna be like Jesus too
Cause if you’re like Jesus
There’s nothing you can’t do

But Billy got a bit confused
By the stories that he read
He turns sick people into fish
And fish into cornbread
He turns wine into water
And water into catfood
He says if Jesus was a carpenter
Well Karen was one too

He says it’s hard to walk on water
If you always part the sea
And that being like Jesus just ain’t
All it’s cracked up to be
He says if Barbara Hershey
Is really Mary Magdeline
He’d trade 33 years as Jesus
For just one night of sin

Now that Billy is a holy man
He gave up drinking beer
It was the high life that cost Jesus
Those 17 lost years
Biblical scholars debate
Just where did Jesus go
Billy says he was at Gruene Hall
Drinking and playing dominos

Ray

Ray (no MP3 available)

Ray died on his eighteenth birthday
Long before I was born
It was a tree that killed him
Not the war
His brother was a war hero
He was just a kid
It wasn’t a plane he crashed
It was just a car

Chorus:
It’s just a day like any other
My goodness it’s hot in June
Does anyone remember
The ones who leave so soon

Aunt Frances, well she went crazy
When I was just a kid
I used to blame her for it
Now I don’t
She didn’t choose the road she took
Anymore than I
Madness soothes the raging beast
Isn’t that the point

Chorus:
It’s just a day like any other
My goodness it’s hot in June
Does anyone remember
The ones who leave so soon

I sat with my father’s father
And watched him suffer twice
I searched for words of comfort
There were none
Everything dear fades away
Sooner than you’d like
Into a cloudy sadness
That covers up the sun

Chorus:
It’s just a day like any other
My goodness it’s hot in June
Does anyone remember
The ones that leave so soon

Prettiest Town in Dixie

Prettiest Town in Dixie (no MP3 available)

The sign on this hotel room wall says
Prettiest Town in Dixie
Well it don’t look so pretty to me
My baby has left town
My baby let me down
And I’ve had all the southern comfort I can stand
Yeah I’ve had all the southern comfort I can stand

Chorus:
Pretty is as pretty does
And I’m doing pretty bad
Pretty took what she wanted now pretty’s gone
So I sit in this hotel room
In a town where I don’t belong
And wonder where it all went wrong
I wonder where it all went wrong

I heard somebody say that beauty’s
In the eye of the beholder
Well you know I’ve held myself a few
I’ve never found a woman
Who could take away my blues
And I’ve had all the southern comfort I can stand
Yeah I’ve had all the southern comfort I can stand

Bridge:
Beauty is a funny thing
If you know what I mean
They say it’s only skin deep
But the skin is all you ever see
And I’ve seen all I need to see
And I’ve seen all I need to see

The sign on this hotel room wall says
Check out time is noon
Guess I’ll be leaving soon
It won’t be soon enough
Thank you very much
I’ve had all the southern comfort I can stand
Yeah I’ve had all the southern comfort I can stand

Chorus:
Pretty is as pretty does
And I’m doing pretty bad
Pretty took what she wanted now pretty’s gone
So I sit in this hotel room
In a town where I don’t belong
And wonder where it all went wrong
I wonder where it all went wrong

Pain in the Fields

Pain in the Fields

Her family lived in a farm house
On the outskirts of town
They came to church every Sunday
But they didn’t hang around
I met her in Sunday school
They tried to teach us wrong from right
I said I’d trade a hundred years in heaven
To be with her for just one night

Chorus:
Now there’s pain in the fields
And lightning in the sky
Thunder in her daddy’s voice
And rain in my baby’s eyes

Well I guess we were foolish
But we were just a couple of kids
We didn’t consider the consequences
It was just something that we did
I said I’d do right by her
But her daddy just wouldn’t hear
He said leave and take that tramp with you
She is no longer welcome here

Chorus:
Now there’s pain in the fields
And lightning in the sky
Thunder in her daddy’s voice
And rain in my baby’s eyes

So we both quit high school
She took a job at the 5 and dime
We rented a place at the trailer park
And bought some furniture on time
I’ve spent the last ten years at the mill
Running a heat set machine
Seven days a week, fifty weeks a year
From 7:00 am until 3:00

Bridge:
But I remember driving down that old dirt road
With my lights turned out so her father wouldn’t know
And how her kisses tasted so sweet
But remembering is a slippery slope
It takes you to places you never should go
Like that cornfield where we used to meet

Chorus:
Cause there’s pain in the fields
And lightning in the sky
Thunder in her daddy’s voice
And rain in my baby’s eyes

Pain in the fields
Lightning in the sky
Thunder all around us
And rain in my baby’s eyes

One Her Own in the Lone Star State

One Her Own in the Lone Star State

Julie’s been thinking lately
‘Bout starting brand new gig
She’s tired of waiting tables
She wants more from life than this

So she bought an old guitar
And she’s learning how to play
She loves those sad country songs
They help chase her blues away

She’s going out on the road
To play honky tonks and bars
She’s been thinking that Texas
Would be a good place to start

Chorus:
She’s gonna paint every town
From the Red River to the Rio Grande
Then she’ll settle down somewhere
Maybe buy a little land
Where she can sit by the streams
Catch a fish, write a song, fall in love
In a place as big as her dreams
She’s going soon and she can’t wait
To be on her own in the Lone Star State

Since she was a little girl
She’s had Texas on her mind
Everyone always told her
Texas is one of a kind

Her father used to tell her
‘Bout Austin and San Antone
All the cowboys in Dallas
Houston and the Astrodome

Chorus:
She’s gonna paint every town
From the Red River to the Rio Grande
Then she’ll settle down somewhere
Maybe buy a little land
Where she can sit by the streams
Catch a fish, write a song, fall in love
In a place as big as her dreams
She’s going soon and she can’t wait
To be on her own in the Lone Star State

One of These Days

One of These Days

I know that our life is hard now
But it won’t always be this way
I’ll give you all the things you want
One of these days

I’ll buy you the finest diamonds
And I’ll take you to Broadway plays
We will live in a big mansion
One of these days

Chorus:
That’s how it’s gonna be
Just you wait and see
That’s how it’s gonna be
One of these days

Honey don’t you listen to
All the bad things they say
I’ll take you away from all this
One of these days

I will buy you the finest clothes
A new dress to wear every day
Everything will be much better
One of these days

Chorus:
That’s how it’s gonna be
Just you wait and see
That’s how it’s gonna be
One of these days

Bridge:
Cause darlin’ I love you so much
Much more than I can ever say
And I’m gonna do right by you
One of these days

Chorus:
That’s how it’s gonna be
Just you wait and see
That’s how it’s gonna be
One of these days

One Hour From Now

One Hour From Now

It’s 8:00 p.m. and the bar just opened
And I was the first one through the door
To take my spot in this booth by the jukebox
Just like so many nights before

I need to get out and make some new friends
Start trying to get back on my feet
But heartache can be a jealous companion
And it just won’t let go of me

Chorus:
One hour from now
She’ll be sitting on that same barstool
Having a drink with her new boyfriend
While I sit here and play the same old fool
My heart will be broken again
One hour from now

I’ve got to find me a new place to drink
Where no one knows she used to be mine
Maybe with a little change of scenery
I could learn to have a good time

But something keeps bringing me back again
Though I don’t understand the allure
I reckon my heart’s used to being broken
And there’s one thing I know for sure

Chorus:
One hour from now
She’ll be sitting on that same barstool
Having a drink with her new boyfriend
While I sit here and play the same old fool
My heart will be broken again
One hour from now

Bridge:
I know she knows that I’m watching
I’m sure she feels sorry for me
But I am stuck in a miserable rut
And I don’t know how to shake free

Chorus:
One hour from now
She’ll be sitting on that same barstool
Having a drink with her new boyfriend
While I sit here and play the same old fool
My heart will be broken again
One hour from now

One Cool Breeze Friend

One Cool Breeze Friend

I haven’t heard from her in days
Looks like she’s up to her old ways
Running around with every man she sees

She left here like a tornado
When she gets a notion to go
She’s going to do whatever she pleases

Chorus:
That’s all right cause my heart’s a strong one
And this road we’re on is a mighty long one
She changes direction like the wind
But she’ll blow this way again
She’s one cool breeze friend

She’s got storm clouds in her blue eyes
And the pressure is starting to rise
I guess we’re in for some rain showers

But the dark clouds will blow over
And when they do if I know her
She’ll come back a hundred miles an hour

Chorus:
That’s all right cause my heart’s a strong one
And this road we’re on is a mighty long one
She changes direction like the wind
But she’ll blow this way again
She’s one cool breeze friend

Bridge:
What we’ve got here is a stormy situation
I don’t need some dude on some TV station
To tell me to get out of the rain
I’m in the eye of a hurricane

Chorus:
That’s all right cause my heart’s a strong one
And this road we’re on is a mighty long one
She changes direction like the wind
But she’ll blow this way again
She’s one cool breeze friend
