There Ain’t No Saints (In St. Louis)
I am a religious man
I have prayed for the rain to stop
When the water topped the levee
My prayers were just drowning crops
My wife is in a shelter
And my children are in there too
We watched our whole life float away
There was nothing we could do
Chorus:
Catholics and Irishmen all have their patron saints
The Show Me State surely needs to see one tonight
The Mississippi River has turned into a raging sea
And it has made a broken hearted sailor out of me
By the grace of Saint Elmo we’ll be all right
But there ain’t no saints in St. Louis tonight
The Bible says that Moses
Turned the ocean into dry land
Moses don’t live in Missouri
So we do the best we can
Soon the water will recede
And leave its muddy calling card
That says disaster area
And means National Guard
Bridge:
The President flew in today
Another helicopter in the sky
He promised federal aid
Then waved and said goodbye
