Deeds Not Words
I’ve listened to all your stories
Each one sadder than the last
You’ve sure got a knack for talking
I bet it’s served you well in the past
Don’t they sound just like a novel
Of a true and bonny lass
Who despite her good intentions
Got led down a wicked garden path
So you just keep on talking to me
I’ll close my eyes so I can’t see
All the lies that you’ve been telling
Maybe I’ll keep buying what you’re selling
Sweet words hide the bitter poison
They keep the truth out of sight
Just because you talk sweet to me
It doesn’t make everything all right
Chorus:
But it’s deeds not words
Acts not intent
You’ve told me so many sad stories
I must be the king of lament
But your cold ways speak louder
Than any excuse I’ve ever heard
Darlin’ it’s deeds that matter
And not just empty words
Deeds not words
It just makes us tragic figures
Out of some Thomas Hardy book
I was looking for a true love
But I wound up in a donnybrook
So you just keep on floating around
Stormy weather can’t bring you down
You’re the queen of the wind and rain
I give myself up to the hurricane
Deeds not words
