This week’s song is The Only Girl in Town. Listen to the MP3:
I co-wrote this one with my friend Bob Clay. When I started writing the song, the idea was to title the song “The Only Girl in Town” (which, of course, we did) but use the emphasized not in the chorus to mean that the singer had moved on to other girls. I thought the “moved on” part would be an interesting surprise after the listener wrongly concluded that the singer was still hung up on the girl based on the title. By the time we finished, the song flipped back the other way.
I think Bob did an excellent job with the melody. This version is by Garrick Alden, a performer out of Washington DC. In our demo version, Bob sang the song and did an excellent job. The demo version is a little rougher sounding, but in a good way that really works on this song (much like it did on Mary Goes Around, which Bob also sings).
