This week’s song is Kinney’s Song, a song I co-wrote with Ronnie Jeffrey. You can hear the MP3:
It’s part of a Friendship Trilogy I wrote a few years ago about 3 old friends I grew up with. The other two are Mustangs and Sandhill Pines. Kinney has occasional business in Houston and so we have been able to keep in touch. One night a few years ago we had a conversation about growing up, getting older and the problems and issues that come along with the passage of time. This song was a direct result of those conversations and was the first written of the trilogy.
While I like the words, particularly in the context of our history and friendship, it is Ronnie’s almost mystical melody and arrangement that makes this song. We hired virtually an entire orchestra to do the various music tracks. It is by far the most intricate arrangement of any song I have ever written or co-written. I absolutely love the music, and the resulting vibe. At over 6 minutes, it is also one of the longest studio songs I have been invloved with.
