Another song I cowrote with Joe Middleton. It’s a song I wrote at the beginning of a relationship that tells the almost exact story of how it ended. I didn’t need a 6-page letter. Just a song or two. Or three.
I know a girl
So pretty and fair
I think that I love her
But she doesn’t care
She’s had some men
Whose love went astray
With a slip of the tongue
She chased ‘em away
I said do you love me
She said “no I don’t”
She might change her mind
We both know she won’t
She broke her watch
So time’s standing still
I think of tomorrow
But she never will
Chorus:
She said “you’re the icing
You’re not the cake
And the love I’ll give you
Is the love that we make”
She said “you’re the salad
And never the steak
The last man I trusted
Will be my last mistake”
Feelings aren’t caught
When you’re on the run
Chase at your peril
She’s just having fun
Visit her heart
Don’t try to move in
At the first sign of love
She’ll take off again
Chorus:
She said “you’re the icing
You’re not the cake
All the love I’ll give you
Is the love that we make”
She said “you’re the salad
Never the steak
The last man I trusted
Will be my last mistake”
