I’ve always been interested in the role of the telephone in the rise and fall of interpersonal relationships, and many of my songs have a telephone theme. Off the top of my head, I can think of Watson Opportunity, Calling Donna and Transient Connection. I’m sure there are more.
So why do you call me
When there’s nothing left to say
Just that we can’t be lovers
Because you’re with another
But you can’t walk away
You can’t walk away
So why do I answer
When I should let freedom ring
I keep answering the bell
You keep putting me through hell
It’s a damn sorry thing
A damn sorry thing
Chorus:
It’s losing time
Once again
I should know better
I never win
But I keep trying
To make you mine
I hear the phone ringing
It’s losing time
Why don’t I ever learn
When there is so little doubt
I’m playing a loser’s game
That always turns out the same
I can’t figure it out
Bridge:
My clock stopped
About two years ago
I’m trying to wind it up
But it’s still moving slow
Chorus:
It’s losing time
Once again
I should know better
I never win
But I keep trying
To make you mine
I hear the phone ringing
It’s losing time
